You and I have slightly different attitudes toward advances in technology.
My first reaction to any new tech thing is to shriek NO, I CANNOT DO THAT IT LOOKS HARD WHY CAN’T I KEEP DOING IT THE OLD WAY.
And then you send me a gentle “clip & save” email telling me how to do the thing in one and one-half steps that are easy enough for a terrier.
Today, Ann Shayne, the tables are turned: I learned how to do an awesome thing in the App Store, and I am going to give you a Clip & Save on how to do it. Take that!
How to Gift Someone the Skill Set App in the App Store
As the Skill Set: Beginning Knitting video app makes its way in the world, we are getting feedback that it is doing exactly what we hoped it would do: it’s a teacher in a new knitter’s pocket—right there, any time, day or night, with nine lessons and dozens of short videos. Watch the technique as often as you like, until your hands are doing the technique with ease.
Here’s how to give somebody their very own Skill Set app.
Open the App Store on your iPhone.
Use the search function to navigate to Skill Set: Beginning Knitting. It comes right up.
Attention: here is the only tricky part. Click on the “share” symbol.
On my phone, since I have the app myself, the share symbol is opposite the button that says “Open.” The share symbol is a box with an up-arrow.
That brings up this screen. Click on the option that says “Gift App…” It has a cute wrapped present next to it.
That opens up a page where you put the email address of your gift recipient, with space for a message.
Now, fill in the email address and your message, and click “Next” on the upper right. (The “Next” button doesn’t become active until you’ve put an email address in the message.)
That takes you to a selection of fruit-themed gift card options, choose one and click “Next” again.
That takes you to a Confirm Your Gift screen. Click “Buy” in the top right.
You’re done! Your recipient will get an email with instructions to download their gifted Skill Set app.
Note for Android users: I can hear all my Android phone friends out there asking if they can gift the Skill Set video app in the Google Play store. Sadly the answer is no, at least at this time.
Give the Gift of Knitting
By helping someone learn to knit, you’re not just giving them a skill. You’re giving them the life-altering joy that knitting brings. A friend for life. A never-ending source of inspiration. An entry ticket to the worldwide community of knitters and fiber artists. A whole lot of cozy clothing.
The Skill Set video app is useful for beginners and more experienced knitters too. Sometimes we need a refresher on a basic technique that we haven’t done in a while, or aren’t sure of. No more YouTube roulette! Short, professional, close-up videos are in your pocket. You can favorite the ones that are your go-tos.
The app has come in handy at my knitting group, which includes several beginners. When someone asks me how to change colors for stripes, or bind off, I hand them the video on my phone, so they can watch and learn at their own pace, without me staring at them. (I stare in an encouraging way, but still: pressure!)
And you’re also supporting MDK, which we appreciate very much.
If you’d like to give a new knitter a truly deluxe intro to the craft, there is no better set-up for knitting success than the Skill Set Box of Joy. It’s everything needed for the 9 lessons in Skill Set, with plenty of beautiful Atlas yarn to make all the swatches and both hats in the Skill Set book—which is included, of course.
If you run into any trouble gifting the Skill Set video app, Ann, let me know and I’ll paste my Clip & Save into a gentle email for you.
